The Wind
Did you ever wonder what it is
that “nips” at you and me?
That blows your hat right off your head?
Well ... it’s the wind, you see.
It howls and growls all winter,
its angry voice implies,
That it will be around a while,
at least ’til winter dies.
The wind can dance and it can sing,
it doesn’t skip a beat,
It has a kind of humming sound,
while whirling ’round your feet.
It turns umbrellas inside out
and whirls the paper all about;
It chants a sort of rhythmic beat
as leaves go skipping down the street.
It stings your face and bites your nose, and
sometimes even hurts your toes.
It stands your hair right up on end,
and causes towering trees to bend.
You try to walk in backward,
to fight off windy gusts,
But even then your clothing flaps
with every windy thrust.
The flags depend upon it,
to keep them flying high
So everyone can see them
wave as they go passing by.
When it is strong and gusty,
you want to run and hide;
The wind is kind of fun to watch -
when you are safe inside!
