Coplay Borough leaders thank volunteers
At the June 7 Coplay Borough Council workshop meeting, Mayor Steve Burker and Councilman Mark Molitoris, chair of the parks and recreation committee, extended their thanks to the Coplay Giant Food Store workers who volunteered recently at the Saylor Park and Parkway Pool area.
The volunteers from Giant helped beautify the area by painting the pump house along with picnic tables.
Molitoris also acknowledged and thanked Cub Scout Pack 32 for painting the fence surrounding the municipal pool.
Molitoris reported the Coplay pool will open for the summer season noon June 18.
On that same day, a dedication will be held to formally open the new Saylor Park playground, featuring the new equipment that was recently installed.
Councilmember Janet Eisenhauer, who leads the library committee, noted the equipment allowing the acceptance of credit cards has arrived and will be installed in the near future.
Councilmember Michael Dreisbach indicated the borough IT equipment upgrade is in progress, starting with the police station.
Dreisbach also mentioned the IT committee hopes to finalize the plan for security camera installation at the borough buildings soon. The committee has met with various vendors.
Police Chief Vince Genovese stated that, for the month of May, there were 100 parking tickets issued. He noted 80 of them were a result of vehicles not being moved on the posted street cleaning days.
Council discussed street cleaning options for the future so as not to inconvenience residents, such as cleaning one side of the street on one day and the other side on another day, or even purchasing cleaning equipment for the borough.
Public works Director Paul Boyle announced a traffic study involving a counter was conducted on Ruch Street, and he expects a report shortly. This data will be shared with council members so they can decide if ordinances are needed to limit large trucks on certain borough streets.
The Coplay Garden Club has asked for permission to use the Coplay pavilion June 30 and Aug. 12, with the fees waived. The club will be holding its annual picnic and working on a project for Coplay Community Days on these respective dates.
This item is on the agenda for the next regular meeting, scheduled for June 14.
