Dear Jacquelyn,
I don’t normally wear high heels, but I am going to be attending a formal event. I need to put aside my comfortable normal flats and wear a shoe with some heel height. Can you please offer some advice so I don’t fumble and fall?
Dear Reader,
Walking more than four feet in heels is an art.
Don’t lose hope. There is a way to walk in heels without looking clumsy and hurting yourself.
With patience, practice and a little advice, you will be able to glide gracefully in heels.
Know your realistic limits. The rule of thumb for any footwear is that it needs to be comfortable. Choose a shoe that is the right fit and a design that complements your feet. Anything that you are trying to force will cause discomfort and look awkward.
Start with trying on heels prior to buying and begin with a lower heel height, such as a kitten heel. This will help you find your comfort zone and determine your preferred heel height.
Then, follow two simple rules: Take it slow and take baby steps. Walking faster comes with practice. Don’t rush it.
The easiest way to look like an amateur in heels is to put your whole foot down at once, as if you’re wearing flats. When wearing heels, put your heel down first, followed by your toe. This will make your walk look more natural.
A traditional walk is heel-toe, and whilst in heels this is still true, it shouldn’t be as pronounced as when in flat shoes. Walk with smaller steps and be light on your heel.
Focus on walking gracefully with your heels on, and the pace will eventually pick up.
Respectfully Yours,
Jacquelyn
