Moore plans activities for kids

At the May 3 Moore Township Board of Supervisors meeting, in the recreation commission report, it was announced there are plans to sponsor kids’ activities at the rec center pavilion Fridays June 17-Aug. 12. Call the township office or visit mooretownship.org for more details.

Additionally, the commission recently purchased new playground equipment awaiting installation.

Supervisors also approved the use of the rec center for an activity for fifth-graders, which was to be held May 25.

Also at the meeting, a decision was made to hold a workshop meeting, which was to be held May 26, regarding the township’s 2022 road plan.

Supervisors approved oil and chip projects at a cost of $129,000. Parts of South Cigar, Sickle, Love and West Beersville roads were expected to be addressed.

Oil and chip, also known as bituminous seal coat or chip seal, covers an existing road with a layer of oil and stone that seals blacktop and provides a wearable surface at a fraction of the cost of resurfacing. This option is an effective way to seal cracks and helps prevent new cracks and potholes.

The oil and chip process is generally used on less traveled, rural roads.

After the meeting, township Manager Nicholas C. Steiner noted supervisors are also planning a workshop meeting to discuss other park opportunities. The meeting will be held at the recreation center pavilion.

Northampton County Conservation Coordinator Sherri Acevedo will present on a strategy to develop a recreation/park plan that can help the township receive grant funding for various recreation projects.

In other business, Steiner’s attention was drawn to a small proliferation of flags that are seen in the township with the words F--- Biden. These flags are located on some well-traveled roads and near children’s play areas.

Steiner acknowledged the existence of the flags and yard signs but noted there are no obscenity ordinances banning profanity on political flags, yards signs or other political paraphernalia that can be viewed by the public.

Steiner also reported a township certificate of deposit with Embassy Bank will be rolled over. The amount of the CD is $6,300.

The public works department hired two part-time seasonal workers for the summer, with a focus on recreation center assistance. The salaries for the workers are $18.50 and $15 per hour, respectively.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is in the process of approving signage for the Pool Road and Pheasant Drive intersection, which is widely viewed as a dangerous intersection.

David Backenstoe noted the agritainment/agritourism ordinance has been remanded to the township planning commission for review. Backenstoe was also granted permission to consult with a zoning specialist on an as- needed basis.

The next supervisors meeting - in person only - is 6 p.m. June 7 at the municipal building, 2491 Community Drive.
