Macungie police continue to investigate a violent incident in the borough in which one person was allegedly stabbed, residents were advised to shelter in place, schools were reportedly locked down and a state highway was closed for approximately two hours.
“Initially it appears to be a targeted act ... not a random act,” Macungie Borough Police Sgt. Travis Kocher said in a telephone interview May 24.
The suspect in the incident remained at large as of May 24.
The incident, reported as a stabbing, happened around 11:45 a.m. May 20 at the railroad tracks at Pennsylvania Route 100, also known as West Main Street in that part of the borough and Race streets.
The injured person was transported to a hospital by ambulance.
According to Kocher, the suspect in the incident fled on foot.
The decision to shelter in place and lock down schools within a one-mile radius was made based on “aggression and flight” by the suspect, Kocher said by phone. A brief foot pursuit by police did not end in capture.
Police did not speculate on what led to the violence.
“The flight of the suspect led to the abundance of caution,” Kocher continued.
PA Route 100 was closed approximately two hours. The shelter-in-place advisory lasted approximately 90 minutes.
Other responding law enforcement agencies included Alburtis and Emmaus police, Pennsylvania State Police Fogelsville, K-9 police units from Allentown and Whitehall, the Office of the Lehigh County District Attorney, the Lehigh County drone team and Macungie Ambulance.
According to Kocher, witnesses told police the initial violent incident was between two people; the person who fled and the person who was injured.
