Zolotarev, D’Souza win doubles championship
The Parkland boys tennis program proves time and again when it’s down, do not count it out.
After shooting blanks in the District 11 Class 3A singles and team championships, two of the scarlet and gray’s most tenacious tennis players resurrected the Trojan postseason by earning a trip to the PIAA state doubles championship.
Dan Zolotarev and Fyodor D’Souza, Parkland’s No. 1 and No. 2 singles players during the regular season, defeated Liberty’s Shayaan Farhad and Roman Farhad, 6-2, 6-3 to win the title last Wednesday at Parkland High School. They were the tournament’s No. 1 seed.
“Fyodor and Dan are absolutely phenomenal leaders,” Parkland coach Michael Hingston said. “They are excellent teachers.”
The two seniors played superb tennis during the four matches, winning every set except one - 5-7 loss in the semis to Southern Lehigh’s Spencer Goodman and Harrison Clark.
This was the year when Zolotarev took his game “to another level,” according to Parkland coach Michael Hingston. Always a formidable tennis player, this year he “developed a good all-around game,” the coach said. With few weaknesses, Zolotarev literally was almost unbeatable, losing only two tennis players all season - Freedom’s Noah Potts and Liberty’s Shayaan Farhad.
Meanwhile D’Souza went through the regular season undefeated earning the Hingston’s respect and admiration for his craftiness, tennis acumen and never-say-die attitude.
The Trojans’ other doubles entry - Josh Thomas and Lucas Lee - represented themselves and their school well, winning their first round match 6-2, 6-3 over Liberty’s Jacksen Jobes and Chris Giannaras. The ride ended later that afternoon in the quarters after a fierce fight ended in a 6-0, 6-7 (6-8), 5-7 loss to Liberty’s Farhad brothers. Even in defeat, Thomas and Lee provided a preview of just how effective they can be next year in their senior seasons.
The first round of the PIAA Class 3A Doubles Championship begins May 27.
