PHS girls T&F finishes first in EPC
The Parkland girls track and field squad is not only good, they are champions.
They proved it in last week’s Eastern Pennsylvania Conference track and field championships at Whitehall High School, winning the tournament with 143 overall points, easily outdistancing second-place Easton with 98 points.
The Trojans had so many top finishers their biggest adversary became boredom in accepting yet another gold medal. Take for instance Naeema Salau, who is so fast you miss her if you blink. She won the 100-meter and 200-meter races in a blistering display of speed and quickness. Teammate Lucy Tobia was no slow poke either, winning the 400-meter competition.
While Parkland could not win the 800-meter run, two young ladies - Lana Hurwitz and Gracie Trexler - took second and third, respectively. Hurwitz decided gold is better than silver and won the 1,600-meter run. Meanwhile Parkland’s relay teams were outstanding, as the 100-meter team won gold, and the 400- and 800- teams won silver.
The Trojan fielders as well had a “field” day. High jumper Madeleine Battista offered a 5-foot, 3-inch performance in claiming gold, while Grace Nation won the triple jump. Coral Shivok finished second in the pole vault, while Chloe Chase took bronze in the javelin.
“The competition between our athletes during practices and training sessions have helped lead to our success in the meets,” Parkland coach Stephen Ott said. “They push each other.”
Next week is another chance to push each other - the District 11 Class 3A track and field championships. They are scheduled for May 17 and 18 at Whitehall High School.
