Hornets top PHS in semi
The Emmaus High School girls lacrosse team has had rival Parkland’s number this year, winning the first two games they played in 2022, a 10-4 win in the regular season finale on May 4 and then a 16-2 victory in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference semifinal round on May 11.
In the third and final game of the year between the two teams, the Green Hornets once again got the better of the Trojans, winning 20-4 in a District 11 Class 3A semifinal Monday at Northampton Area High School.
But now the Green Hornets have their eyes set on bigger accomplishments and challenges. Following the victory on Monday, Emmaus meets Pleasant Valley in the final, a team that has beaten Emmaus twice this year, including in the EPC final about two weeks ago. The Bears were also victorious by a 15-10 score during the regular season on April 11. The Green Hornets (19-3 overall) will be looking for their first district crown since 2011.
“Parkland’s always been a big rival for us,” said senior Julia Cote. “I’m very proud of the way we played against them this year and last year. We have improved a lot. We’ve all been working very hard. I’m very proud of our team.”
This one was over by halftime as Emmaus jumped out to a double-digit lead in the first half before going into the intermission ahead 12-2. The Green Hornets then outscored the Trojans 8-2 in the second half of the contest to roll to victory.
Sophomore Jordyn Poll led all scorers with a game-high, nine-point effort with five goals and four assists, while Cote recorded five tallies. Junior Emily Hollinger and senior Mikayla Viola both had four goals and added an assist in the win, while sophomore Olivia Schmidt and senior Meredith Shields each scored one goal.
“There’s just so many threats down on attack, we’re very unstoppable,” Cote said. “No one can tell who is going to shoot and who is going to score, everyone is a threat down there.”
Emmaus, which was the top seed in the EPC tournament, is also the top team in districts as well. The Bears (18-5), who are the three seed, stunned the Green Hornets in the EPC final, winning their first conference crown with an 11-9 victory. The game is set for 7 p.m., from Lehigh University Wednesday night.
