‘HOLEY MOLEY’! Golf inside a library? Kids, parents putter around

Parkland Community Library, South Whitehall, was open as usual May 14 but something was different.

In two of the library’s meeting rooms, children and their parents were playing a round or two of putt putt golf, ignoring the rainy weather outdoors.

“This is the first time we have done this,” said Jaclyn Hoimes, head of youth services. “Amy Joy Grillo and I planned it together and we tasked other library staff with designing a theme for the putt putt.

“We asked each department to create their own theme and carry it out.”

Their ideas were transformed into a mini golf course with five holes.

“We did take sign ups, but we had a lot of walk ins,” Hoimes said.

The course was well received by visitors.

“It was cool,” said Frankie Di Maggio, who was there with his family. “This was the first time for me playing miniature golf.”

“It was a nice Saturday activity, especially with the rain,” said his father, Tony Di Maggio.

Fourth grader Jaxon Makovsky also enjoyed playing.

“We were looking for things to do on a Saturday and we hadn’t come here in a long time, so here we are,” said his father Mike Makosky.

Jaxon Makovsky is no newcomer when it comes to golf.

“He’s been playing for a year or two,” said Mike Makovsky. “We’ve played at Melody Lakes in Quakertown and in Allentown as well.”

Fourth grader Ashley Kirklinski had fun hitting balls.

“Who would have thought we’d go golfing at the library,” said her mother, Dawn.

“We’ve had multiple requests to make it an annual event,” Hoimes said.
