Track team earns medals at CL meet
Kyra Jackson initially did have some doubts about jumping 33 feet or better in the long jump at the recent Colonial League track and field championships at Whitehall High School.
“I thought Coach (Kyle) Rusnock was crazy when he said I could jump 33 feet,” said the Catasauqua senior. “When I watched some videos my mom had, my performance was pretty good.
“I took the extra step my coach wanted me to take and jumped off my other leg. My triple jump at leagues is definitely a moment I’ll never forget.”
Jackson took second in the long jump with a mark of 34-6.75. She took 10th in the league last year.
“My immediate thought was ‘wow’.” added Jackson. “I went from 10th to second. I jumped 33 feet then I went to 34 and six inches.”
Junior Wyatt Younes took top honors in the long jump with a mark of 21-1.5. Younes also finished seventh in the 200 (23.67).
Senior Jacob Dove brought home a silver medal in the 400 with a time of 51.86. Sophomore Lauren DeLong was second in the shot out with a distance of 31-08.
Senior Aidan Gerhard had a fifth-place finish in the discus with a mark of 90-3, and DeLong was eighth in 82-11.
The Rough Riders’ girls’ 4 x 100 relay team was fifth (54.20) and their 4 x 800 squad was seventh (11:29.67).
Catty’s boys’ 4 x 100 relay team was fifth (45.09), their 4 x 400 relay unit was sixth (3:34.56), and their 4 x 800 team was seventh (10:27.04).
As a team, the girls were 10th of 12 teams, and the boys were ninth.
Rusnock certainly was pleased with his team’s performances.
“We had a fantastic league meet,” he stressed. “It was great to see four placers and a bunch of kids scoring points.
“All of our athletes were competitive. The team was positive and cheered each other on. It was awesome to sit back and watch the successes and the great team camaraderie.”
Along with the four place winners, Rusnock was confident that his relay team could make a mark at districts.
“They should have done well,” he added. “We believe we can have some athletes moving ahead to states.”
