Salisbury school board approves proposed final budget
At the May 11 Salisbury Township School Board meeting the board approved the proposed final budget and recognized the retirement of three long-standing district employees.
The meeting commenced with the board taking time to applaud the accomplishments of both teachers and students.
Superintendent Lynn Fuini-Hetten and the board acknowledged the dedicated service of retiring teachers Robert Ludwig, health and physical education teacher at Salisbury Elementary School – 27 years, Jacqueline Miller, art teacher at SES – 32 years and Debra Saeger, special education teacher at SES – 18 years.
The board expressed appreciation for their dedicated service and wished them well in their future endeavors.
Salisbury High School Assistant Principal Ryan Yurchick acknowledged three students who will be the first Salisbury students to complete the Lehigh Carbon Community College Early College Program.
When students Sarah Staack, Naiya Schankowitz and Maggie Helsel graduate high school they will also have earned an associate degree in general studies.
Staack gave a presentation to the board detailing how the dual enrollment program works and was able to provide a fresh perspective of the benefits and challenges of the program.
SHS students Nolan Grejda and Tristan Monahan updated the board on the many events happening at the high school.
Spring sports are nearing completion and exciting events are in the offing. Keystone testing began May 16 and the Salisbury High School yearbook will hold a Keystone kickoff spirit week and pep rally which will include theme days, games, contests and prizes.
The high school’s spring concert was held as well as Mr. Salisbury and the theater department held a Broadway Night. Salisbury seniors can look forward to the Senior Sunrise Celebration, prom night May 21 at Lehigh University’s Mountaintop Campus, a class trip to Knoeble’s June 2 and graduation June 5 at the stadium.
Middle school students Soledad Lausch and Olivia Cudd reported a Pennsylvania System of School Assessment Fun Day was held for students who worked hard and met expectations during testing.
Students participated in activities such as bowling, roller skating or a movie. The Interact Club and student council will hold a summer luau May 20 and a schoolwide math competition is currently being held using the First in Math program.
The eighth grade class enjoyed a trip to the Philadelphia Historic District to enhance their knowledge of American history. Additionally, two upcoming trips for eighth graders include a trip to Hershey Park and the Macungie pool.
Jeslyn Dinh and Grace Williams gave a summary of past events enjoyed by the students at SES. Second grade students visited the Crayola Factory where they learned firsthand how crayons and markers are made. Earth Day was celebrated by learning how pollution and recycling affect our environment. Some students participated in a clean up outside and also made birdhouses from recycled items.
The Salisbury High School football team paid a visit to the school to read to students and a Star Wars-themed social/emotional learning night was held for families May 4.
Upcoming events include a fourth grade field trip to Hawk Mountain, a third grade trip to Quiet Valley and a first grade trip to the Lehigh Valley Zoo. Equally exciting will be the Ice Cream Festival, talent show, fourth grade move up day, field days, walkathon, Girls on the Run 5K and end of school year assemblies.
