Picnic tables return to Triangle Park

Emmaus Borough Council met May 16 with only a few items on the agenda, mainly pertaining to parking assignments and committee reappointments.

There were no personal appeals or special presentations during the meeting.

It was announced the Memorial Day parade will take place May 30 and will start 9 a.m. at Emmaus High School.

In general administration, the fire union contract was put forward and approved by council. It’s a five-year contract and the first of its kind for the borough. It gave the union members of the fire department an appropriate increase in wages.

The bill list was the only resolution in budget and finance. The total amounted to $831,294.29.

The Emmaus Arts Commission was approved to paint three picnic tables to be used at Triangle Park May to November. Additionally, Rebecca Straus was appointed to the Emmaus Community Garden Commission.

Borough Manager Shane Pepe highlighted a few recent hires in his report. Seasonal employees were hired for the Emmaus Community Pool, which includes lifeguards, cashiers and concession stand attendants. In other hiring news, the public works director position has been narrowed to around 25 candidates and interviews will be conducted soon.

A water truck lease was approved to be financed by First Columbia Bank. According to the documents, they will “finance the water service truck for two years for $53,021 at 3.1 percent interest, which totals $27,375 per year.”

Alan Sylvestre was reappointed as the recreation and entertainment commission chairperson.

There was one item in new business. Ordinance 1228 was amended, removing a residential disabled parking sign on the street located across from 628 Ridge St. in Emmaus.

Resolution 2022-25 was approved during health, sanitation and codes. This approved the revised preliminary/final major subdivision plan proposed by John and Diane Nonnemacher, 303 Franklin St., Emmaus. This will create three lots at the property, instead of just one.

The last pool study meeting with the parks and recreation committee will be 6 p.m. May 18. The meeting can be accessed via Zoom through the Emmaus borough website on the calendar page.

Councilman John Hart announced two personnel decisions in public safety. Kevin Schmidt was promoted to sergeant in the Emmaus Police Department and Timothy Kline was hired as a part-time police officer.

The next Emmaus Borough Council meeting will take place 7 p.m. June 20 at St. John’s UCC, 139 N. Fourth St.
