Macungie Institute activity increases

During the May 16 Macungie Borough Council meeting, a request was discussed for crosswalk lighting. The request is being considered for a grant which must be filed by the end of the month. This lighting would be a sign showing a pedestrian and would be illuminated on the edges with flashing lights. Council members had concerns over the cost of the sign. The resolution was passed by a vote of 3-2.

Mason Smith, a 2021 graduate of Emmaus High School, introduced himself as a political science major who just completed his first year at New Haven University. He said he has a passion for public service and is looking to be involved in Macungie borough.

Macungie Institute Coordinator Darlene Misselbeck provided a report on the Institute. She said events are up from eight events in February to 23 in March and April. The income for April is $2,267. The Institute’s Facebook page has increased to 1,018 likes.

There were several events including the grand reopening celebration, a gardening lecture, book club, crocheting class and a tai chi class. It was estimated 750 people visited the Macungie Institute in April.

A need for standard posters was discussed to make it easier when advertising regular events at the Institute.

Alan Printz and Terry Kohler were appointed to the zoning hearing board as alternates.

There was an executive session before the council meeting on personnel matters and one after the regular meeting for personnel matters and real estate.
