Liberty looks for playoff redemption

Nazareth was one of the toughest opponents Liberty saw on the diamond this year and now both teams hit on a collision course in Tuesday’s East Penn Conference baseball semifinals.

The result was past Press deadlines, but it was certainly one game where all eyes were the doubleheader nightcap.

Liberty’s only loss of the season came against Nazareth (15-6) in the second game of the season, 8-3. The team’s second encounter resulted in a 1-0 victory for the Hurricanes (20-1).

“Nazareth was one of the toughest teams we saw,” said head coach Andy Pitsilos. “They have two very good pitchers and they are an overall good team.”

With Monday’s postponement of the semifinal round due to rain, it gave both teams an extra day of rest, something Pitsilos wasn’t sure would help his team.

“The extra day actually hurts us,” he said. “These games are spaced so that number one pitchers can come back for game two. This just gives their number one another day of rest.”

After going 15-1 in regular season league play the past two years, Liberty now searches for some hardware after losing to Pleasant Valley in last year’s semifinals.

The ‘Canes needed to go to extra innings in their EPC quarterfinal matchup to scrape together a 2-1 win over Pocono East to register their 19th straight win. Jacob Rivera’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth scored Ayden Zabala to push Liberty into the final four.

With Parkland and Emmaus in the other semifinal matchup, Liberty hopes they can get a crack at either of them in Thursday’s championship contest back at DeSales.
