Catty falls to Salisbury
Brandon Jenny is one of three seniors on the Catasauqua baseball roster this spring.
With the loss of three key seniors from last year’s 8-11 squad, Jenny understood that this season could be one filled with plenty of growing pains.
It turns out, it was.
But the young and frisky Rough Riders still managed to bring their season down to the final game, needing a win over Salisbury but falling 7-5 in the end.
“We [were] a very young team,” offered Jenny a few weeks ago. “We have some freshmen who have improved.
“We just [had] to play with 100 percent all the time, and we [were] starting to mesh better. We still [believed] we [could] make a run at the league playoffs and districts.”
Jenny got the start against Salisbury, while he gave up seven runs in the loss, only four were earned. He struck out eight batters in 4.2 innings pitched. John Pushkar closed things out with 1.1 innings of work, allowing no hits and striking out three.
But Jenny was counted out down the stretch when the Roughies needed to win games.
“Brandon has been pretty consistent for us,” noted Catty head coach Steve Bradley. “In some games, he has struggled, but he has pitched well overall. He has really helped some of the younger kids.
“We [looked] for him to have a good finish to his year.”
The team did get some solid work from others this year. Junior McKay Lewis pitched six solid innings allowing five hits and two runs in the team’s 12-2 victory over Northern Lehigh.
However, McKay also fell victim to a 5-1 loss to Salisbury earlier this season. He allowed four runs over 4.2 innings. At the time of this story, Lewis has a 1-1 mark with a 1.96 ERA. Senior Wesley Fotta led the team with a .333 batting average followed by Fye (.321), Pushkar (.310) and Lewis (.300).
Still, a run that came down to the final game of the season should only help the Roughs going forward.
“We’re young and we’ve been reminded about it,” added Bradley. “But these guys have battled through every game.
“We’re [saw] some signs, that we could hang around close to the end of the season.”
In Catty’s loss to the Falcons last week, the team lead early on, taking a 5-0 lead over the first two innings. But, they weren’t able to score the rest of the way, giving up three runs to Salisbury in the fourth and then four more in the fifth.
Jacob Bucchin had four RBIs for Salisbury in the win and Lucas Graver added two RBIs.
For Catty Bryann Rivera and Matt Fotta each had two hits. Rivera, Pushkar, Wesley Fotta, Matt Fotta and Jenny each had RBIs for Catty.
