Girls set to wrap up the regular season

On Tuesday, the Northampton softball team completed its first regular season sweep of Parkland in Kristy Henritzy’s coaching tenure with a 5-2 comeback win on the Trojan’s home field.

While the bottom of most teams’ lineups represents an opportunity for the pitcher to take a breather, Northampton’s 6 through 9 hitters provided the offensive spark that led to the win.

Parkland broke on top 2-0 by converting a leadoff triple in the first inning and scoring a hustle run in the third when the runner on second came home following an infield single.

Lily Stuhldreher, batting in the 6 spot, led off the Kids’ half of the fourth inning by taking an 0-2 pitch down the right field line and into the corner for a standup triple. Two batters later, catcher Angela Fisher flew deep enough to center to allow Stuhldreher to tag and score Northampton’s first run.

Two innings later, the tandem combined to draw the K-Kids even. Stuhldreher reached on an error and Fisher collected her second RBI with a double down the third baseline.

Fisher described her approach to those at bats, “I just stepped into the box and I was thinking, ‘I just want to make contact in those situations.’ Just tried to keep my head in the moment and make a good swing.”

Ninth-place hitter Hannah Makovsky kept the rally going by singling through the right side of the infield. Rilee Ehrlacher then drove in Fisher with a single past the shortstop. After a foul out, Taylor Kranzley drew a 2-out walk to load the bases. Devyn Demchak’s 2-run single marked the end of the scoring.

A fully healthy Kaira Zamadics stood in the pitching circle for the first time since the April 22 game against Bethlehem Catholic. She went the distance, surrendering 2 runs, 6 hits, 1 walk, and striking out 9.

The win brings the K-Kids’ record to 15-1 on the season, 13-1 in the EPC.

This afternoon, the team travels to Whitehall. A win for the Kids will all but mathematically guarantee the top seed in the EPC tournament and the top spot in the District XI 6A power rankings going into the postseason.

The K-Kids are at Bangor for a nonleague game on Saturday. The Slaters are 11-6 overall and 1-2 against the EPC with a win against Central and losses to Nazareth and Easton. Northampton concludes its regular season by hosting Allen on Monday.

The EPC quarterfinals are next Thursday.
