Apsley wins 300 hurdles

Northampton senior Shaun Apsley was crowned the East Penn Conference champion in the 300 meter hurdles on day one of two at the EPC Track and Field Championships on Tuesday at Whitehall High School.

“It feels good. It’s one goal I’ve accomplished, and I hope to accomplish two more medals. I’m pretty happy,” Apsley said.

Apsley’s time was 40.11, slightly over his personal record.

“I think at the end of my races I get a little scared that I’m gonna clip my trail leg on them. My legs are tired, so I usually try to get them higher. That’s my mindset, getting them higher on the hurdles,” he said.

After Apsley passed several hurdlers, the Konkrete Kid gold medalist stayed in the lead for good.

“It gives me a good push, being in front of them and knowing they’re behind me,” said Apsley. “Running in the last straightaway, I could see their shadows, so that pushed me.”

Nazareth’s Jake Hilarczyk came in second in 40.54, and Parkland’s Andrew Beers was third with a time of 40.75.

Northampton junior Danika Cuchran won a fourth-place medal, also in the 300 meter hurdles.

“It’s nice. I was really surprised about it,” Cuchran said. “I’ve been trying to P.R. all season. I finally broke 50 after the one meet, so I ran a good race.”

Cuchran’s time was 48.38.

Easton’s Maggie Scalzo won the event in 46.53, followed by Easton’s Jayla Reinert with a time of 46.60, and Freedom’s Sydney Brown with a time of 47.35.

Day two of the EPC Track and Field Championships will have taken place on May 11, past Press deadlines.

The District XI Track and Field Championships are scheduled for May 17 and 18, also at Whitehall High School.
