Whitehall’s Ava Wells and Gregory Sommer were first-time East Penn Conference medalists on day one of two at the EPC Track and Field Championships on Tuesday at Whitehall High School.
Wells, a sophomore, won the bronze medal in pole vault.
“It feels great. Honestly, I’m ecstatic right now,” Wells said. “I was really nervous, but my coach (Tyler Miller) is really good at keeping us not thinking about that and just going out and having fun.”
Wells cleared 10-00.00.
“Throughout the season, I’ve been trying to focus on keeping my whole body straight after I plant and keeping my arms straighter,” she said. “I feel like I definitely improved on the stuff I was working on, but there still is room for improvement.”
Liberty’s Annika Flanigan took first place, clearing 11-00.00, and Parkland’s Coral Shivok placed second, clearing 10-06.00.
Sommer, a junior, also won the bronze medal in pole vault.
“I was really excited because I’ve never been to a meet this big,” Sommer said. “It feels really good and a lot better than I thought I was going to do.”
Sommer cleared 11-06.00.
“The last couple weeks, my steps have been off, so I wasn’t really confident coming in, and I guess it just worked out today. I had to move back a couple inches from where I was running,” he said
Emmaus’s Aiden Hurlburt was the gold medalist with a height of 14-00.00, and Stroudsburg’s Drew Brinker won silver with a jump of 13-06.00.
