The Parkland girls track and field team ended the regular season last Tuesday with a 99-51 win over rival Emmaus to conclude a perfect 8-0 regular season.
“The student-athletes on both of our teams push each other,” Parkland head coach Stephen Ott said. “The competitions between our athletes during practices and training sessions have helped lead to our success in the meets.”
The Emmaus victory produced several heroes. Naeema Salau was quick as silver in winning the 100-meter and 200-meter races. Lucy Tobia won the 400-meter race, Lana Hurwitz claimed the 800-and 1,600-meter runs. Madison Bowman won the 100-and 300-meter hurdles. The Trojans won also the 100-meter and 400-meter relays.
Madeline Bautista had also a fine day. She established a personal best 5 feet, 5 inches to win the high jump, one inch shy of the school record. Coral Shivok won the pole vault. Grace Nation took the triple jump and Chloe Chase claimed the javelin throw.
“Emmaus and Parkland have a great rivalry,” Ott said. “Our athletes want to win - I stress to them about taking one competition at a time. No matter the mindset, the mindset has to be ‘on to the next.’”
Next for Parkland is the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference and District 11 Class 3A tournaments.
“This is their chance to shine,” the coach said. “Our coaching staff wants to see them accomplish all of their goals, no matter how big or small.”
The EPC meet is scheduled for May 10 and 11 at Whitehall’s Zephyr Sports Complex.
