Grant approved for Hickory Street Bridge

It was announced during the May 2 Macungie Borough Council meeting, a grant has been awarded for the Hickory Street Bridge in the amount of $883,666. The project’s total cost is $1.2 million. The borough is seeking further grant assistance before acting on this. It will be decided by the end of May as to how this will be handled.

Dan Hummel from Allen Organ attended the meeting and spoke about the water problems between Allen Organ and Stone Hill Meadows. Hummel said there is improvement but feels the swale design was not followed.

There are plans to begin breaking ground for the car wash at Macungie Commons. No structures can begin until the building permit is acquired.

The Macungie Volunteer Fire Department has requested the use of a police vehicle. Fire Chief Mike Natysyn described the vehicles currently in use. Presently a brush truck is used and the requested vehicle would take its place. This was approved.

The Macungie Farmers Market will reopen May 12 and continue through Oct. 27. It is located on Lumber Street and the hours are 4-7 p.m. Locally grown fruits and vegetables along with fresh baked goods, cooking oils, soaps and crafts are included. The farmers market supports local farmers, businesses and independent artisans and crafters.

Justin Huddleston was appointed to the zoning hearing board. Terry Kohler and Alan Printz were appointed as alternates.

There was an executive session before the meeting over personnel matters. There was another executive session after the meeting over personnel matters and real estate.
