Youth plan Victorian tea, basket raffle

The youth at Holy Trinity Memorial Lutheran Church, Fourth and Pine streets, Catasauqua, are hosting a family-friendly junior tea and basket raffle for boys and girls and their parents/grandparents 2-4 p.m. May 15. Doors open 1:30 p.m. for the basket raffle.

The event includes finger foods and beverages served on china, a craft, bingo and basket raffle with kid- and family-friendly gift cards and baskets bursting with fun. This year’s junior tea will include a special guest.

All of the proceeds from the basket raffle will be donated to Tails of Valor, Paws of Honor, to fund a “puppy scholarship.” Tails of Valor, located in Coopersburg, is dedicated to providing service canines to veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury and physical disabilities. Service dog puppies and their raisers attend training classes and go on field trips to work on their socialization, manners and skills in public. The puppy scholarship helps offset the training costs.

For tickets to the event, call Diane at 610-739-6006.

Holy Trinity’s youth, who are known for their annual 30-hour famine to raise awareness and funds to fight world hunger, continued their generous activities during the past year, despite limitations imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. They include the following.

• Souper Bowl of Caring for the 22nd year, with four youth collecting $526 in their soup pots. The funds were donated to the Holy Trinity’s resource room. The food and nonfood items in the resource room are available throughout the week to meet the needs of the economically challenged community.

• Contributed $20 to SELF to cover the cost of a backpack for a low-income Allentown student

• Participated in the 30-hour famine, raising more than $2,500 for World Vision’s work to combat hunger, improve availability of health care and clean water and share the message of God’s love in severely underdeveloped communities

• Sponsor a child from South Africa through World Vision, at a cost of $39 per month. Last year’s basket raffle raised $1,472, enough to continue this sponsorship for the 11th year, as well as give her special gifts to help her with the needs of her family and community beyond what child sponsorship can meet.

• Hosted a taco bar, raising $872 for the Vision Alive orphanage in Kenya

• Filled two large shoe boxes with personal care and gift items for two 16-year-olds as part of Volunteer Center of the Lehigh Valley’s annual Christmas drive

• Served at three of the church’s fundraiser dinners. All of those proceeds went to local nonprofits.
