WCMS Leo Club’s May 14 yard sale to benefit student groups

Whitehall-Coplay Middle School will be hosting its first yard sale event 10 a.m.-2 p.m. May 14 in the parking lot of the school, 2930 Zephyr Blvd. In the event of rain, the sale will be held indoors.

Jamie Biro, WCMS teacher and co-adviser of WCMS’ Leo Club, hopes the sale will become an annual event.

“Our Leo Club members encouraged me to brainstorm to find a way to connect the school faculty and staff with the community in a fun and social environment; hence, the yard sale idea was born,” Biro said.

The yard sale is open to the public, and visitors can park in the WCMS parking lot. Approximately 15 teachers and staff will be participating, and hot dogs and water will also be sold. According to Biro, staff were excited to hear about the event, and some have volunteered to help even though they aren’t selling.

WCMS teachers and staff will be selling items and donating a minimum of 10 percent of their sales back to their club of choice, including Leo Club, Yearbook Club, Reading Olympics, Aevidum, Art Club or Science Olympiad.

Leo Club is a service organization that does activities that benefit Whitehall-Coplay School District and local and global communities.

According to Biro, the Leos have decorated WCMS hallways with motivational posters and colorful decorations. Some Leos have become pen pals with first-grade students at Gockley Elementary School.

Leos raised $325 in donations for Pediatric Cancer Foundation of the Lehigh Valley. Also, some students helped with cleaning and organization at Whitehall Township Public Library.

Leo Club also held a student hat day/teacher jeans or sweatpants day and raised $800 in donations for United Ukrainian American Relief Committee Inc.

Biro and the Leos invite the community to come out and talk with the teachers and browse all of the items for sale.
