Coplay hopes for grant funds for police cameras

At the Coplay Borough Council workshop meeting May 3, Councilman Rick Kern, who leads the grants committee, shared that the borough is in a favorable position to be awarded a federal grant that will provide additional funding for body cameras to be worn by the Coplay Police Department.

This grant will not require the borough to provide any matching costs - meaning zero dollars will be taken from the borough budget.

Public works Director Paul Boyle reported the borough will be holding the annual tire drop-off 10 a.m.-2 p.m. June 11 in the lower lot of the Parkway on Keefer Street. This event is for Coplay residents only. Rims, bike tires and motorcycle tires will not be accepted.

Fire Chief Brandon Bechtel reported the Coplay Fire Department requested permission to hold a coin toss fundraiser May 28 at Second and Chestnut streets. The fire department has also requested use of the borough property at 165 Cherry St. for a fundraiser May 14.

Council will vote on both of these items at next week’s regular meeting.

Council members discussed the idea of allowing nonprofit organizations to utilize the 165 Cherry St. property to hold fundraisers as needed. Further discussion between Carl Luckenbach, public building committee lead, and Charles Sodl, emergency services committee lead, will take place regarding a plan, which would then be shared with the entire borough council.

Councilwoman Janet Eisenhauer said both part-time positions at Coplay Public Library have been filled.

The library will hold its basket social fundraiser May 7-14, she said.

Eisenhauer, lead of the finance and administration committees, noted the borough finance committee received five proposals from different credit card processing companies so the borough office and police stations can be equipped to accept credit card payments.

The committee has chosen Elavon as the provider. This item will be on the agenda for approval at the regular meeting, scheduled for May 10.

Councilman Mark Molitoris, who leads the parks and recreation committee, commented on the proposal to offer Catasauqua Borough residents a special rate for passes to Coplay’s Parkway Pool.

Those residents will not have access to the Catasauqua pool this coming summer. This item will be voted on at the May meeting.

Discussion then ensued regarding the possibility of purchasing a card reader for pool pass tracking. Sodl mentioned more information can be collected on pool use, which would be helpful in the future if and when a new pool or maintenance to the pool is needed. The parks and recreation committee is researching this idea.

Council President Lou Bodish announced street sweeping will be done May 19 and 20.

Bodish reported an open house is scheduled for 10 a.m.-2 p.m. June 4 at the borough’s new building at 1 Bridge St.
