Emmaus Memorial Day parade steps out May 30

Emmaus will host several programs that will enable you to celebrate and honor our veterans. Among them are the veterans’ bricks installation, the programs at the Emmaus cemeteries and the annual Memorial Day parade.

Do you love a parade? Come out May 30 and cheer the marchers. The parade will form promptly 9 a.m. at the Emmaus High School parking lot, move to Chestnut Street and proceed to the memorial site at the intersection of Third and Fourth streets at which time there will be a memorial service.

The Emmaus Veterans Committee urges all veterans to participate with their posts. Guest speakers will be local veterans relating their military experiences.

In case of inclement weather, the parade will be canceled but a short ceremony will be held at the memorial site by the honor guard to honor our fallen heroes.

The Emmaus Honor Guard will honor veterans at each of the six Emmaus cemeteries May 29. The public is invited to be present for the programs which include a short prayer service, rifle salute and taps. The programs will start 8 a.m. at Calvary Cemetery, followed by Old Moravian at Ridge Street, Lutheran Reformed, Northwood and end at Evangelical at Second and Ridge streets.

The annual veteran’s brick installation program will be held 10 a.m. May 28 at the Emmaus Remembrance Garden. The deadline for ordering bricks was April 1. The Remembrance Garden is on the east side of Emmaus, 164 Main St. Enter at the Cintas building driveway and follow the garden signs. Now that spring is here, come out and enjoy the activities scheduled at Emmaus Community Park.

The Emmaus Community Pool, 1356 Shimerville Road, will be open for the season. The pool will be open for the Memorial Day holiday weekend noon to 8 p.m. May 28 and 29 and noon to 5 p.m. May 30. Then it will close and open June 4 and 5 and will open daily noon to 8 p.m. June 11 for the rest of the season. For information on the pool schedule and its programs, call 610-928-1130.

Cardio drumming will be held 6:30 p.m. every Monday at the park. Cardio drumming is a fun cardio workout done to some awesome upbeat music (some equipment required). For information on the programs, visit info@borough.emmaus.pa.us.com or call 610-965-9292.

Zumba exercise is held 8:45 a.m. every Saturday in the Sam Landis Arts Pavilion in the park.

The first movie in the park for the season, “Grease,” will be shown 7 p.m. May 28.

The Sunday Concerts in the Park season will begin in June.

Emmaus Borough Council meets 7 p.m. May 2 and 16 in the basement of St. John’s United Church of Christ, 139 N. Fourth St., Emmaus, during the renovation of borough hall.

The temporary borough offices at 420 S. 10th St. will be closed for the Memorial Day holiday May 30.

Emmaus Farmers Market on the Triangle will open 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 1 for its regular season. This is the 19th season for the farmers market.

The Knauss Homestead Preservation Society is hosting a bingo fundraiser for the continued restoration of the Knauss Homestead 1 p.m. May 1 at the Emmaus Fire Co. #1, 50 S. Fourth St., Emmaus. The doors open 11:30 a.m. Tickets, which are for 20 games, can be purchased at David’s Electric, 314 Main St., Emmaus Jewel Shop, 339 Main St. and South Mountain Cycle, 319 Main St. Tickets are also available at the door at a slight additional cost. As part of the Knauss Homestead Preservation Society’s continued efforts to restore the Knauss Homestead, the society is encouraging donations to cover the cost of removing the asbestos siding on the barn. The Emmaus Garden Club will meet noon May 3 at Faith Presbyterian Church, 3002 N. Second St., Emmaus. The program will be “Before You Garden” by Jenny Rose Carey. Carey is an avid, hands-on gardener who has gardened in both England and the United States. Her Victorian property, Northview, contains diverse garden spaces, including a shade garden, moss garden and a stumpery. Her gardens have been featured on the PBS series, The Victory Garden, in The Wall Street Journal, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Green Scene magazine and Pennsylvania Gardener. Ready to exercise your green thumb? The Emmaus Public Library will hold a succulent-planting party 1 to 2 p.m. May 14 outside in the library’s backyard. The party is for adults and families (Please RSVP). The library will have pots and a variety of succulent plugs. You’ll have a chance to decorate the pots if you choose. Another planting activity for kids presented by Emmaus Community Garden will be held 6 p.m. April 27 and 10:30 a.m. May 7 in the library’s backyard. This is a drop-in event for all ages.

Artist and performer Terrill Johnson will present an art talk 6 p.m. May 9 and then will present a fun caricature workshop 11 a.m. May 21 on the library’s back lawn. The Emmaus Historical Society is celebrating its 30th anniversary. Over the years the society has had several locations until 2013 when it moved into the present location at 218 Main St. The museum is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. The society will celebrate its 30th anniversary with Yergey Brewing June 25. Music, trivia and much more will be a part of this celebration/fundraising event. Watch for more information.

The society’s 2022 membership drive is in full swing. It is time to renew, join or give a gift of membership by stopping by the museum Saturdays. In honor of its 30th anniversary, new members who join by April 30 will have a membership through Dec. 31, 2023.

The society will resume its monthly meetings and programs May 25. May’s meeting will be held 7 p.m. at the Moravian Church Fellowship Hall, 146 Main St., Emmaus. Bob Good will present the program, “The Circus is coming to the Valley.” He’ll relate the history of circuses, some of which came to the Lehigh Valley, and also tell delightful stories of how both elephants and a giant were on the sidewalks in Allentown.

The society is participating in Emmaus’ June 4 community yard sale. Housewares, home décor, small appliances, lighting antiques, collectibles, indoor and outdoor furniture are just some of the treasures the society will have priced to sell. Due to the overwhelming generosity of the community and space limitations, the society is no longer able to accept donations for this year’s sale. The society thanks everyone who has given to this fundraiser and welcomes all to stop and shop 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 4.

The society has the following bus trips scheduled for 2022: Aug. 16, “David” at Sight & Sound Theater and Nov. 22, “Home for the Holidays” at the American Music Theater. Call Nancy at 610-967-5715 for more information and to sign up.

The Emmaus High School Class of 1966 is having a reunion party 2 p.m. May 21 at the Superior Restaurant, 102 State Road and Main Street in Emmaus. Good news from the Shelter House, 601 S. Fourth St. Jon Levin, a certified Pennsylvania conservation naturalist, has volunteered to be the Shelter House naturalist. Levin has just returned from a self-guided bird-watching tour of the Panama Canal region. Levin plans some interesting events at the Shelter House. For information, call 484-347-1661.
