Whitehall father-son powerlifters Don and Mike Kuhns lifted in the 100% Raw (no wraps) Master Nationals at the Weightlifting Hall of Fame in York, recently.
Mike, 36, weighed in at 131 pounds and won the sub-master (35-39) category in the 132-pound class with a 1,222-pound total, via a 523-pound squat, a 275-pound bench press and a 424-pound deadlift.
His squat and total were new sub-master, world records in his weight class.
On an allowed fourth attempt for a world record, he squatted 552 pounds, which is the all-time, all-federation drug-tested world record, and was 25-pounds over quadruple body weight. Successful fourth attempts are not counted in the 3-lift total.
Don, 70, rewrote the record book in the 70-74, 220-pound weight class with four world records, a 413-pound squat, 270-pound bench press and 468-pound deadlift for a 1,151-pound total. He weighed in at 206 pounds.
The Kuhns’ have competed together in over 50 meets going back 23 years, but this was their first where they both were in the master age groups.
Both train at Competitive Edge Gym in Allentown.
