Mary, Kenstler named team members

Two Lehigh Carbon Community College students, Jace Izellah Mary, of Whitehall, and Michelle Kenstler, of Kempton, have been named members of the 2021-22 All-Pennsylvania Academic Team, which is sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa (the international honor society for two-year colleges), the Coca-Cola Corporation, the State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) and the Pennsylvania Commission for Community Colleges (PACCC).

Selection for the academic team is competitive, and students must have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. Community college presidents or their designated nominators may submit no more than two nominations per campus for this award. An independent panel of judges considers outstanding academic rigor, GPA, academic and leadership awards and engagement in college and community service in the selection process. Each member of the All-Pennsylvania Academic Team receives a full two-year scholarship to any of the universities in the PASSHE system and competes at the national level for scholarships from the All-USA Academic Team and the Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team.

Mary graduated from Whitehall High School and is a physical sciences major at LCCC. She serves as president of the Student Government Association, vice president of the college’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa and is in the Honors Scholars program. Mary works as a peer mentor and has volunteered at numerous college events including new student convocation, open house and fall fest, as well as PTK projects and events. In addition, Mary was selected as a Bronze Scholar on Coca-Cola’s 2022 Academic Team and was selected as a Krysta Hankee Memorial Scholarship recipient. Selection as a Coca-Cola Bronze Scholar is based on scores the student earned in the All-USA Academic Team competition, for which more than 2,000 applications were received this year. Mary, who is the daughter of immigrants, plans to continue her education in pursuit of a career in biomedical engineering.

Kenstler is a psychology major at LCCC, a member of the Honor Scholars program and serves as president of the LCCC chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. Michelle chaired the chapter’s Honor in Action Project, The Legacy of Rituals, which received fourth place at the regional recognition PTK Middle States convention. Michelle has volunteered at chapter events including the fall 2021 transfer fair, the chapter college project and coordinated volunteer outreach with the Sixth Street Shelter in Allentown. She also attended the PTK 2021 Honors Institute and completed the PTK Transfer Edge course. She plans to continue her studies in psychology at Kutztown University in pursuit of a career as a professional counselor.

Konek inducted into honor society

Amber Konek, of Northampton, was recently initiated into the honor society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Konek is among approximately 25,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the Top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the Top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897 under the leadership of undergraduate student Marcus L. Urann, who had a desire to create a different kind of honor society: one that recognized excellence in all academic disciplines. Today, the society has chapters on more than 325 campuses in the United States, its territories and the Philippines. Its mission is to “recognize and promote academic excellence in all fields of higher education and to engage the community of scholars in service to others.”

Hendricks inducted into honor society

Rauch inducted into honor society

East Stroudsburg University’s sport management department inducted 13 students, including Kimberly Rauch, of Bath, into the 2022 Chi Sigma Mu Student Honor Society in sport management. The COSMA (Commission on Sport Management Accreditation) Chi Sigma Mu Honor Society represents the best students that COSMA-accredited programs have to offer. ESU sport management faculty nominated these students for their academic excellence (minimum 3.4 GPA for undergraduates and 3.6 GPA for graduates), extracurricular activities and engagement and community service. There are 33 colleges that have COSMA-accredited sport management academic programs, and 67 sport management students were inducted to Chi Sigma Mu Honor Society in 2022.

East Stroudsburg University, one of the 14 institutions in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, opened in 1893 as East Stroudsburg Normal School.
