LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

’Canes remain hot

Liberty is no stranger to taking care of business in the regular season as of late, but the Hurricanes 12-1 start to this spring might be a bit of a surprise to outsiders.

The Hurricanes are winners of 11 straight games heading into this week with games against Nazareth (8-4), Dieruff (3-7) and Freedom (5-7).

Head coach Andy Pitsilos acknowledged that this season has been a welcoming surprise for the program.

“This year is going better than expected,” Pitsilos said. “We have been able to learn and get valuable experience and still win. This doesn’t always happen, so it has been a bonus for us.”

The Hurricanes have stayed above the pack this year, thanks to their always quality pitching, but their aggressiveness on the basepaths and ability to score more runs has certainly given them an edge this season.

They’ve averaged over seven runs a game, including a 21 run outburst over East Stroudsburg North last week.

They’ve also had two defining wins over Parkland this season.

“Generally this is a very smart and tough group of kids with high baseball IQ’s,” Pitsilos said. “This team is different than last year’s team. We do more manufacturing of runs, more stealing, but the pitching has been the same. Both year’s pitching has been good.”

Freedom and Bethlehem Catholic both come into a critical week sitting with 5-7 records with their playoff hopes in the balance.

The Pates have a tough week with Becahi, Nazareth, Liberty and Abington Heights. Tuesday’s contest with the Hawks would be vital for both team’s postseason lives.

Outside of their contest with Freedom, Becahi faces Easton and North Pocono this week.
