In these times of fast food and eating on the run, we spend less and less time in the physical act of eating. We gobble down a sandwich while working at our desks, checking our emails, driving or watching TV.
Once upon a time, gathering around the table (and food) was a way to build community. Michael Schaadt and Jack Steltzer, founders of the Diversity Dinners of Bethlehem, noticed that fellowship and food are the foundation for understanding and respecting each other. Seeing the division within the country, Schaadt and Steltzer decided to start small and bring people from this community with diverse backgrounds together to share their experiences and get to know each other while enjoying a meal.
Schaadt and Steltzer envision an evening of positive interactions. They stressed that this is not a religious or political forum. Instead this is a night of sharing life experiences with other guests at your table. A moderator will encourage conversation by thoughtful questions and guided conversation. The mission is to build positive relationships while acknowledging our similarities and appreciating our differences.
In cooperation with Rosemont Lutheran Church in Bethlehem, the Diversity Dinner will be April 30, beginning at 5 p.m.
“We welcome everyone to come and join us in this celebratory night of friendly dialogue,” Schaadt said.
