PHS boys tennis looks to stay perfect

The Parkland boys tennis program has few equals in the Lehigh Valley or District 11.

The Trojans improved to 11-0 with a 6-1 road win over Freedom last Thursday and are among the favorites to win the EPC playoff title. A final regular season contest is scheduled for April 19 against Emmaus.

Parkland’s top three singles players - No. 1 Dan Zolotarev, No. 2 Fyodor D’Souza and No. 3 Josh Thomas have been almost unbeatable. Zolotarev did lose to the Patriots’ Noah Potts, but it was a rare setback for the Parkland senior. In fact, it was the season’s only setback.

“Danny has a good forehand and is hitting some big shots,” Trojans head coach Michael Hingston said. “He’s a little bit stronger and playing more aggressive.”

Zolotarev,, along with D’Souza comprise one of the EPC’s best, if not the best, one-two punch.

“Fyodor would be number one on most teams,” the coach said. “He’s like a chameleon out there. He’s the craftiest player I’ve ever coached.”

D’Souza has not lost a tennis match all season and wants to keep it that way. Meanwhile Thomas “continues to evolve” by becoming a “consistent tennis player,” Hingston said. The evolution has been superb, as the junior is undefeated.

“Josh is a student of the game,” Hingston said.

The double contingents - an area the coach said would require “patience” as they matured - has played like seasoned veterans. No. 2 doubles Lucas Lee and Kevin Yao, No. 3 Taehyuk Yang and Ryan Wu and No. 4 Rithik Raghuraman and Noah Oxfeld have played outstanding tennis. This could have been a weak spot for Parkland this year - instead they’ve been another Trojan strength.

Hingston named Freedom and Liberty as “teams to beat” in the EPC. The Trojans will have the chance to do just that with the EPC Championship scheduled for April 21.
