Hornet boys tennis competes in league tourney

The Emmaus boys tennis program’s outstanding 12-4 regular season record did not translate into outstanding success at the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference tournament last Thursday at Parkland High School.

No. 1 singles Eddy Chow and No. 3 singles Nic Gilboy did achieve victories in their quarterfinal matches, good for fourth overall. The Hornets’ No. 3 doubles contingent of Ben Fletcher and Zach Moser tasted victory as well, winning their quarters match.

Chow, who Emmaus coach Fred Saab has called “a very talented tennis player,” has played well this year. His victory over Stroudsburg’s John Willis displayed how he has strengthened all aspects of his game from last season. But Chow’s ride came to an end in the semis with a loss to Parkland’s Dan Zolotarev.

The Hornets’ No. 2 singles player, Nick Stone, lost in the quarters to Stroudsburg’s Jackson Kozma. Meanwhile Gilboy played solid tennis in his quarterfinal match, beating Easton’s Josh Henry. The winning vibe did not continue in the semis, as Gilboy lost to Parkland’s Josh Thomas.

No. 2 doubles Gabe Huff and Ryan Baig could not help the Emmaus cause, losing in the quarterfinals to Central Catholic’s Jake Zeller and Danny Patruno.

Fletcher and Moser had more success though, winning their quarterfinal match over Bethlehem Catholic’s Xavier Shive-Sanchez and Josh Maruscak.

Fletcher “has worked hard to win a spot in the starting lineup,” Saab said. Meanwhile Moser has used “his height to his advantage.” However hard work and height were not enough in the semis to beat Liberty’s Chris Giannaras and Jackson Jobes.

No. 4 doubles Rohan Desai and Ayden Kegley could not find the winning combination in their quarterfinal loss to Nazareth’s Akash Advan and Jordan Wagner.

Up next for Emmaus is the District 11 singles, team and doubles tournaments over the next few weeks.
