Track teams excelling

Putting team records aside, Catasauqua’s track and field teams have been excelling on an individual basis. Through their first four meets, the girls’ team had a 1-3 mark, while the boys’ unit was 0-4.

“We’re doing very well,” said head coach Kyle Rusnock. “Our records don’t reflect that looking at it team wise.

“Everybody seems to be hitting their personal best times. We have been working hard and improving each week.”

Junior Wyatt Younes has been pacing the boys team in the 100, 200, 400 and long jump. In last week’s events. Younes tied for 10th best in the league in the 100 (11.60) and was tied for fifth in the 200 (23.80).

He also had the third best performance in the league in the long jump with a mark of 20 feet.

“Wyatt is off to a great start,” said Rusnock. “He has been working hard all year, and you can see the results.

“He also has played a leadership role on the team. He is one of the upperclassmen and has helped out the younger kids on the team.”

Younes isn’t totally surprised with his early results.

“My goal is to be one of the best in the league,” he said. “I have been spending a lot of time working on the events.

“We have a great group, and everyone is really working together and supporting each other.”

Junior Jacob Dove should have a strong season in the 400, as he posted the league’s fifth best time in the 400 last week with a time of 53.60. Fellow junior Trevor Rigits has been progressing in the javelin, as he hit 113.02.

On the girls’ side, sophomore Lauren DeLong had the league’s best toss in the shot put last week with a mark of 32-9, and she was 10th in the discus (78.01). Sophomore Kaitlyn Lawton was 12th in the shot put (27-9) and senior Aidan Gerhard was 15th (27.0). Gerhard also notched a seventh-place finish in the discus (83-8).

Senior Madison Harth had a busy week, placing seventh in the long jump (14-11) 12th in triple jump (30.01), and 20th in the 110 hurdles (19.70).

Sophomore Alivia Bear was 12th in the 800 with a time of 2:43.40 and ninth in the 1,600 with a time of 5:48.

Fellow sophomore Sade Rodriguez was eighth in the javelin (85-09) and senior Trisha Bloszinky was fifth in the shot put (29-08).

The girls 4 X 800 relay team of seniors Lucy Brubaker and Ashley Ritter along with junior Kaylee Weidaw and sophomore Ava Smith had the sixth-best time of 11:59.30.

Rusnock is confident his team can continue their individual bests, as well as gain some team victories in the process this week.

“We’ll see,” he said. “Hopefully, we get some more good news. I think we have a real shot of picking up some team wins soon.”
