Theater Review: ‘Xanadu’ a good skate at NCC

Summer camp opened early in the Lehigh Valley.

Well, maybe not summer, but certainly camp, in the form of the musical, “Xanadu,” in its Lehigh Valley premiere, April 21-24, Lipkin Theatre, Northampton Community College.

“Xanadu” is self-mockingly fun, pop-culture savvy and jukebox hit-friendly.

Mythological Greek gods step down from on high to advise on a matter of cosmic importance: the opening of a roller-disco in Venice, Calif., in 1980.

The 2007 musical, with book by Douglas Carter Beane and music and lyrics by Jeff Lynne and John Farrar is based on the 1980 Universal Pictures movie, starring Olivia Newton-John with a screenplay by Richard Danus and Marc Rubel, and based on the movie, “Down To Earth” (1947), starring Rita Hayworth. Xanadu was Mongolian emperor Kublai Khan’s summer palace.

The April 21 “Xanadu” NCC opening night performance was seen for this theater review.

In the musical, “Xanadu” is the name of a roller disco that Sonny Malone (a dynamic Joshua Crowley) wants to open in an abandoned theater owned by Danny Maguire (a seriously hilarious Justin Abarca).

Sonny falls in love with Kira (Kait Stein with a commanding stage presence and a voice to match), who happens to be the goddess Clio.

The muses are very amusing. “You can tell we’re a Greek Chorus. We all talk in unison,” they say, in unison.

Of course, even up on the clouds, it’s not all silver linings. Melpomene (Trish Kane Steel, who is a belter and a great comedienne) and Calliope (Amelia Illingworth, double-take funny and in good voice) pull some celestial strings.

Notable are Erato (Deja Breitfeller, with fine voice and terrific dance moves); Terpsichore, Hermes, Tubes singer (Maxwell J. Wetherhold, who gives his all to each role) and Eros-Centaur (Alex Kleinschmidt, who plays it straight and is all the more funny for it.).

The cast of 16 includes Barbara Wetherhold (Hera), August Gaumer (Thalia, Young Danny), Noel Cruz (Euterpe), Kate Morgan (Aphrodite, Andrews Sisters), Samantha Prentice (Medusa, Andrews Sisters), Conner Sternberg (Urania, Tubes singer), Cade Kocher (Polyhmnia, Cyclops) and Cassidy Bordonaro (Thetis).

Standout numbers include “I’m Alive” (Kait Stein), “Evil Woman” (Trish Kane Steele, Amelia Illingworth), “Suddenly” (Kait Stein, Joshua Crowley) and “All Over The World” (Joshua Crowley, Kait Stein, Justin Abarca).

The excellent band, led by music director, conductor, keyboard player Lucille De Masi Kincaid, is: Chad Miller, guitar; Michael Marini, keyboard; Tom Pepitone, bass, and James Arrizza, drums.

Bill Mutimer, Northampton Community College Theater Department head, directs with a wink, wink, nudge, nudge approach to the show’s numerous puns, movie and theater-insider humor, and funny business.

Sample dialogue: “The sirens. They never call.”

Choreographer Tina Williams moves the cast vigorously and frequently across and around the three-quarter round stage in the arena theater, which is well-suited for the show.

There’s a scaffold walkway, 18 disco balls (by my count, not including the disco beach balls tossed into the audience) neon Xanadu sign and, cleverly, a phone booth and a Pegasus on wheels by Set Designer Brett Oliveira, who is also technical director and lighting designer (the op-art and chalk drawing projections are impressive).

Costumer D. Polly Kendrick has devised groovy fringed leather vests and multi-colored tie-dye pants.

“Xanadu” is laugh out-loud hilarious. And it has a very danceable beat.
