Tennis falls to conclude regular season
While most spring sports are barely passing their halfway marks, the Northampton boys tennis team wrapped up their season on Tuesday at Whitehall. The Zephyrs claimed this year’s Cement Belt point with a 4-3 match win over the Kids in the frigid, blustery, and rainy conditions.
At first singles, the K-Kids’ Pearce Foulk beat Nate Mak 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. Foulke concluded his junior campaign with an overall mark of 7-10, 6-8 in the EPC. He is the first alternate for the EPC tournament if one of the top 8 seeds is unable to play.
Whitehall claimed the point at second singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win by Josh Laky over senior Logan Carbonell. Carbonell finished his season with a mark of 3-11 (3-9 EPC).
At third singles, the Zephyrs’ Dan Labram defeated Ian Pearn 7-5, 6-2. The Northampton senior ended his campaign with a 3-11 record in both league and overall competition.
Isaiah Harris and Jake Gula picked up a semiofficial point with an 8-3 pro-set win at first doubles. Their opponents were not recorded on the scoresheet.
At second doubles, Northampton’s Brennan Grover and Bennett Smith lost to Antoni Szlagiewicz and Vincent Tran 2-6, 3-6. The K-Kids’ duo finished the year with an 2-13 record (2-11 EPC).
The match at third doubles was the last to finish, with the Kids’ pairing of Dane Missmer and Lucas Vadelund going down in three sets: 7-5, 4-6, 3-6, to Lex Prebosnyak and Gabby Roustic. The Northampton twosome had a 4-10 overall record in 2022 (3-9 EPC).
Brett Bastian and Maxwil Kochan beat Jimmy Kaba and Henry Li 6-3, 6-1 to get the point at fourth doubles for the K-Kids. Bastian and Kochen finished the year 6-8 overall, 5-7 in the EPC.
As a team, Northampton was 5-12 overall with a 4-10 league record which put them in the tenth place in the EPC. Pearn, Carbonell, Gula, and Harris are all graduating seniors, but the rest of the competitors will be back, with Foulk the only current junior.
Captain Ian Pearn gave his final thoughts on the season.
“I enjoyed it,” he said. “I think everyone enjoyed it. It didn’t go as well as we thought it would, but our younger players improved a lot and our seniors had a good last season. Overall, it wasn’t too bad.”
