Girls learning to win

Catasauqua head softball coach Paige Kogelman had a better feeling about her team after they defeated Saucon Valley 15-6.

A few days earlier, it wasn’t the case as the Rough Riders lost a 16-3 decision to Pen Argyl.

“Against Pen Argyl, it was rough,” said Kogelman. “We came from practice to a game, and it was very different. We came out trying to find our groove.

“They were really hard on themselves after that game. About an inning and half into the Saucon Valley game, things started to change.”

Kogelman and her troops noticed the difference.

“I think the girls figured out how to win,” said Kogelman. “They should know how to win, and what you have to do yo get there,

“In our win, it was great to see everyone get involved in the offense. Everyone in the lineup hit.”

Kogelman credited the play of sophomore Sophia Becker, who hit .375 after two games.

“Sophia has really been killing the ball,” stressed Kogelman. “She has shown a lot of patience. She has stepped up her game.”

Sophomores Delaney Troxell and Alivia June will continue to be the one-two punch on the mound for the Roughies, primarily with Troxell taking the lead.

Troxell had 11 strikeouts and one walk in the victory. She had 19 strikeouts and three walks after two starts and hit .500.

“She definitely was in her groove,” added Kogelman about Troxell. “She was solid on the mound using all of her pitches. Delaney also has been steady at the plate

“I think Alivia will spend most of her time at shortstop. We will utilize her in certain situations on the mound.”

Kogelman also noted the play of newcomers Timari Wilkins at second and Nayeska Miranda at first.

“They are both figuring it out,” said Kogelman. “They both have come in and helped replace seniors that we lost.”

Yet, Kogelman realizes her young club is growing along the way.

“We don’t have any seniors this year,” she said. “We know we’re young, but they have been working to execute.”

“We’re in the crunch schedule,” said Kogelman. “But I really take it day-by-day.
