Sister Verna Meckes, 97, died April 14, 2022, at Phoebe Home, Allentown. She was the wife of the late Roy Meckes. Born in Allentown, she was a daughter of the late Alvin and Hattie (Hefflefinger) Sell.

She graduated from Allen High School in 1942. She went to college at Luther Crest, N.J. to become a Lutheran Deaconess. While there she was the Dean of Women. She interned in Hoboken, N.J. and taught at-risk children in the area. She got her calling to Redeemer Lutheran Church in Allentown. At this time she also was ordained as a Deaconess on Feb. 23, 1975, to be a youth leader.

She is survived by a son, Dale Sr. (Claudine), of Blue Earth, Minn.; a daughter-in-law, Susan (Roy), of Pittsfield; a sister, Janet (Carl) Dankle; a sister-in-law, Althea (Wesley) Sell; a sister-in-law, Jeannie (Herbert) Sell; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by an infant daughter, Susan; a son, Roy; a grandson Jarret; brothers, Kenneth, Herman, Hurbert, Wesley, Emmerson; a sister, Grace.
