Input requested on the future of the community pool

The April 18 Emmaus Borough Council meeting began with a special presentation from Alan Sylvestre, who is a member of the Emmaus Recreation and Entertainment Commission. He was there to give a preview of the 2022 Summer Events.

To highlight, they will be holding Tunes on the Triangle at the Emmaus Triangle. The series takes place every other Friday and begins June 10 and ending Aug. 26. The Concerts in the Park series will continue at Emmaus Community Park. That begins June 5 and occurs on numerous Sundays throughout the summer.

On May 28, there will be a Movie in the Park event. This will be a car show and “Grease” movie night. It takes place throughout the afternoon and the movie will begin at dusk.

There will be a pool study meeting 6 p.m. April 20 and May 18 on Zoom. The borough is conducting this study regarding the future planning for the Emmaus Community Pool. Attendees will learn about the study, give feedback on pool concepts and share input on the future of the pool. All borough residents and nonresidents who have an interest in the pool are encouraged to attend.

In other business, Pamela Landis had parking concerns about an area behind her house. She said there is a paper alley leading to her property, though people keep blocking it. Borough President Brent Labenberg said council will send someone for a survey of the property and situation.

April Maddona made a request for a road closure for a block party June 25. The road closures will be near 105 Elm St., Emmaus.

James Yoachim sent his letter of resignation from the public works department.

Next, Mayor Lee Ann Gilbert had a proclamation in her report. Proclamation 2022-527 was for the announcement of Arbor Day April 29.

Resolution 2022-20 was approved for a Sewage Planning Module for 322 & 326 Franklin St.

In parks and recreation, Resolution 2022-21 was approved to submit a Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development Greenways grant application. This will be for Lions Playground.

Two items were approved during the public safety portion of the meeting. The first dealt with the Chief of Police Civil Service Protection. This is for newly appointed Police Chief Jason Apgar. He scored a perfect score on the civil service test. Council approved this item.

Next, was a vote for the Emmaus Borough Emergency Operations Plan. This was not unanimous and will be discussed at a later meeting.

In general administration, Fredricka “Ricki” Stringfellow was appointed to the Emmaus Public Library Board.

The bill list totaled $703,588 in the budget and finance report. This dates to the previous meeting.

In the borough manager’s report, an Emmaus firefighter was promoted to Master Firefighter. That was the last item on the agenda.

The next Emmaus Borough Council meeting will be held 7 p.m. May 2. The meetings occur virtually through the Emmaus Borough website or you can attend the meetings at St. John’s U.C.C., 139 N. Fourth St., Emmaus.
