East Allen planning commission reorganizes

At its April 7 session, the East Allen Township Planning Commission held its reorganization meeting for 2022.

Bob Mills, current commission chair, opened the meeting and promptly turned the meeting over to township Solicitor Joseph Piperato III to act as temporary chair.

Piperato ran the nomination and election of 2022 officers.

Mills was elected commission chair, Art Hemming was tapped to be vice chair, and Norm Daniels was elected as commission secretary.

Township Manager Brent Green requested the minutes from the last planning commission meeting be tabled until the next meeting, so he can seek clarification of other items from outside sources that will be incorporated into the minutes.

Mills announced the Sunny Slope sub-development representative was not available for the meeting; therefore, the sub-development’s report was tabled until the next meeting, set for May 5.

A representative from Lehigh Engineering addressed the commission on the subdivision project on behalf of the property’s owners. The Lehigh Engineering representative indicated there is a plan for a shared driveway for two of the three lots. The third lot will have its own driveway. There is currently one driveway on the lot.

Various questions were raised about a greenhouse on the property, its purpose and if the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is fully aware of the scope of the project. Questions regarding the size of impervious cover and stormwater management on the proposed properties were also raised.

The Lehigh Engineering representative stated they have a number of issues and answers to pertinent questions to pursue regarding the sub-development. He noted he simply wanted to approach the commission at this meeting to learn if members have any early concerns about the project.

A subdivision planned for Hanover Road was granted permission to extend the development plans through Aug. 31.

There was a discussion about granting extensions to developers or sub-development projects. Piperato noted there is some ambiguity in the state Planning Commission Code. The property owner or representative must request the extension with the township.

In another matter, the board is seeking to fill a vacancy on the planning commission. To apply, contact the township office at 610-262-7961.

The next East Allen Township Planning Commission meeting is 7 p.m. May 5 at the municipal building, 5344 Nor-Bath Pike. It is a hybrid meeting, with both in-person and virtual options.
