Hornet baseball starts season 7-0
The Emmaus baseball team improved to 7-0 last week.
The Hornets beat Northampton last Monday, 5-0. Clinging to a 1-0 lead, Emmaus scored four runs in the fifth inning, including a pair on Zach McEllroy’s two-out double.
Dom Chiego went 3-for-3 the win, while Jaden Gallagher had a pair of hits and a run scored. The Hornets scored five runs on six hits and four walks.
Luke Deschenes gave up two hits over four and a third innings, striking out six and walking seven. Tyler LePage got the save, allowing no hits over two and two thirds innings.
Emmaus beat East Stroudsburg South 10-0 in six innings last Monday, April 4. LePage went 3-for-4 with a couple RBIs and a run scored. Colin Foley went 2-for-3 in that win with three RBIs. Foley and Deschenes (2-for-3) both homered in the win. McEllroy also had a pair of hits against the Cavaliers.
Pitchers Andrew Pion, TJ Geist, Ryan Latchford, Ben Yartmyk and Williams Fleck combined to allow just three hits in the game.
The Hornets opened the month of April with a 8-4 win over Whitehall on April 2.
Trailing 2-0 early in the game, Emmaus used a six-run third inning to take the lead en route to the win.
Eight different Hornet hitters had at least one hit against the Zephyrs. Colin Wilson (2-for-4) was the only Emmaus player with more than one hit.
Deschenes allowed four hits and one earned run over five and two-thirds innings. LePage closed the game, striking out three Whitehall batters in the final one and a third innings. They pitched around three errors by the Hornet defense.
Emmaus posted five-inning wins over Dieruff (10-0) and Allen (13-3) to finish off last month.
Four Hornets had two hits each against Dieruff, including Josiah Williams, Anthony Viola, Wilson and William Fleck. McEllroy went 3-for-3 in the win over the Huskies, while Pion and Latchford combined to pitch a five-hit shutout.
Against Allen, Williams went 2-for-4, with three RBIs and two runs. Chiego was 2-for-3 with an RBI and LePage was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs. Foley got the win with four innings and no earned runs. Emmaus committed three errors against the Canaries.
Emmaus opened the season with nonleague wins over Blue Mountain (6-2) and Warwick (6-5) on March 25 and 26, respectively.
The win over Warwick saw the Hornets trailing 1-0 after two innings. They took a 6-1 lead in the fourth inning, then held on for the win after Warriors scored four in the top of the fifth.
Chiego went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs in the win, while four other Hornets had one hit each.
Foley got the start, allowing two hits and no earned runs over two innings. Pion pitched three innings to earn the win. Gallagher finished off the game, allowing one hit over two innings.
In the season opener against Blue Mountain, Chiego, Foley and LePage all had two hits each, while Viola and Williams each drove in a pair of runs.
Deschenes went five and a third innings against the Eagles, allowing four hits and one earned run. LePage pitched the final inning and two thirds, allowing no hits and striking out three.
