Emmaus boys lacrosse beats Hershey
The Emmaus High School boys lacrosse team is the defending District 11 champion and wants to prove that last year was no fluke by coming out in 2022 and repeating its title. Through the first three weeks of the regular season, the Green Hornets have done just that. Emmaus won five of its first six games overall, including a 3-0 mark in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference.
Last Saturday, the Green Hornets had a strong nonconference opponent in Hershey High School on its home turf. Emmaus used its offensive firepower to defeat the Trojans 10-2 in Hershey.
“I’m happy with the 6-1 start to the season, and also impressed by how quickly this team has blended new players with the returning contributors from the 2021 season,” said head coach Stu Speicher. “We are playing exactly how I hoped we would to start the season, but there are still more games to be played. I am pleased with how all of the new guys have gelled and picked up right where we left off last season.”
Speicher has wanted to add nonconference games against teams that will make his group better, outside of the difficult conference schedule. Hershey brings talent to the field and recent success, having played in the PIAA state final just three seasons ago.
“Hershey was a state finalist in 2019 and has had some success against our program in recent meetings, so it’s rewarding to have played so well against them,” Speicher said. “I would hope Saturday’s performance would strengthen our confidence going forward.”
Seven different Green Hornets scored goals, led by three from Connor Flok.
Flok and Will Barber tallied the game’s first two goals to put Emmaus out in front early, but the Trojans would tie it at 2-2 before the Green Hornets took control, scoring eight unanswered goals.
“Coach Marc Feldman has again done an unbelievable job building our offensive approach, as our play has improved every game,” said Speicher. “Connor Flok is among the best scorers in the history of Emmaus lacrosse. His 100th career goal is a wonderful achievement. I’m very proud of him.”
Speicher also spoke about the defense, which went three-plus quarters not allowing a goal.
“Our defense remains a strength of our team,” Speicher said. “It allows us to play a fast and aggressive style of lacrosse that will hopefully lead us to future victories.”
Emmaus has three games in three days this week, squaring off with Pleasant Valley, Garnet Valley and Northampton in the middle of the week.
