Road maintenance contract approved in Lower Macungie

During the April 7 Lower Macungie Township Board of Commissioners meeting, the conditional use hearing regarding the Grist Mill Development was put before the commissioners for a vote. This development is located on Brookside Road next to the former Dries Hardware, now Wehrung’s Lumber & Home Center. This was approved.

The conditional use hearing for Posh Properties was also approved. This property is in the area of Route 222 and the Interstate 78 on-ramp. There are residential homes to the south and a Park and Ride and car dealership to the west. There is a building on the lot but it will be removed. This development will consist of a day care and a storage facility.

Resolution 2022-24 was approved for the preliminary/final plan for Posh Properties. A sewer planning module for this property was also approved.

Lehigh County Executive Phillips Armstrong made his annual appearance at the commissioners meeting. He is reaching out to local municipalities and said many small businesses have received aid from the grant for COVID-19 relief.

Olen Biehl has resigned from the safety committee effective immediately.

The sewer lateral project received five bids with the lowest one from Wexcon of Mohrsville, Berks County. The bid received was for $165,225. The commissioners approved this.

There is a project for drainage improvements at Cross Creek which will include a small detention basin in the Brookfield Park. Bids were received with Stonewood Landshaping, of Zionsville, with the low bid of $107,935. This was approved by the commissioners.

There is a drainage project at Maulfair Drive with four bids received for the project. The low bidder was Anrich, of Wayne, with a bid of $395,899. This was approved.

Several road maintenance projects were considered. Lower Macungie Township has 135 miles of roads and once every seven years, some sort of maintenance is done on them. This includes chip sealing, micro surfacing, crack sealing and an ultrathin bonded wearing course program. All projects received one bid from the same company which is Asphalt Maintenance Solutions, LLC. These were all approved by the commissioners.

A waiver was approved over some piping at Schaeffer Run Commons, also known as Hamilton Walk. Resolution 2022-25 was approved by the commissioners.

Grass cutting bids were received but there are some changes. The bids have been rejected and will go out for rebidding.

The Public Works Collective Bargaining agreement was approved. The old contract expired Dec. 31, 2021 and the new contract is for 2022-2025.

After a two year reprieve, certain residences will have water shut-offs. This is set to begin April 21.

There was an executive session regarding personnel before the meeting.
