FREEDOM HS NEWS New season, new marking period by Emma Lazo
March’s end brought new beginnings. Freedom HS commenced the fourth and final marking period of the 2021-2022 school year. Students received the opportunity to explore new classes according to their interests and meet new teachers and friends last week. I would say the fresh start was a success.
The concept of success seems to be a consistent pattern at Freedom, demonstrated through the outstanding student academic achievements recognized recently. On March 25, ceremonies were held where BASD announced the two winners of the 2022 Bethlehem Area School District Superintendent’s Scholarship. Freedom’s Genesis Hernandez will attend Moravian University on a full-ride scholarship.
Success comes in numbers at Freedom. Dr. Joseph Roy and BASD leaders recognized the dedication students in FHS Black Excellence and Joy Club continue to accomplish. The club was started in November 2021 by Jaydah Jones. The commitment she and the members have contributed does not go unnoticed.
Empowered women like Jaydah fill the halls of Freedom. March was National Women’s History Month. Some incredible Freedom young women received praise for the difference they are making in the community. These women included of Hailey Martin, Katie Twiggar, Emma Lazo and Jazmine Gibbons.
Not only in but also outside of the classroom do students continue to demonstrate excellence. Congratulations, Braelin Moore for being awarded 2022 Lineman of the Year by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Lehigh Valley Chapter. Good news spreads from football to volleyball. Alaina Roman and Elizabeth Barnes were recognized among the best in the nation by JVA for their dominance in volleyball. What a great way to end the month of March.
April 1 started with a “home run,” as the guidance department organized a successful fundraiser tailored around the opening day of baseball season. The staff and students raised over $1,100 to support UNICEF and children in Ukraine by donating a dollar to wear their favorite Major League Baseball team attire.
The National Honor Society announced that it would resume the annual egg hunt for children and grandchildren of BASD employees on April 4. A round of applause goes to the students who made contributions for the event to be possible.
Thanks to the time and fundraising of students in Freedom Mini Thon and Liberty Mini Thon, $22,761.93 was raised this year to provide support for children with pediatric cancer through the Four Diamonds Fund.
Thank you to the staff and students at Freedom for making March another great month and starting the month of April on the same track.
