Tennis team gets another win
The Northampton boys tennis team picked up their fourth match win of the season, a 6-0 blanking of the Pocono Mountain East on the Carbone Courts Tuesday afternoon. At 4-7, the K-Kids are ranked ninth in District XI AAA, one spot short of the qualifying for districts, with 5 matches yet to play.
At #1 singles, Pearce Foulk beat Daniel Trott 7-6, 2-6, 7-2 (tiebreaker played for third set).
Head coach Daniele Bowman spoke about Foulk, “We talked before the match and I said, ‘Go into it just like any other match.’ I’m glad he had that mindset. I’m very happy with how Pearce is progressing over the last couple of games. He’s gotten some nice compliments from Parkland and Nazareth and Beca. Those guys have been playing much longer and Pearce only picked this up a couple of years ago. He’s definitely holding his own.”
Logan Carbonell defeated James Grassi 8-6 at second singles after the East coach instructed the players to play a set to 8 for the match instead of a tiebreaker when the score was 6-6. Because all parties agreed, the result stood.
Ian Pearn took care of business against Evan Schmidt to win third singles, 6-4, 6-0.
Brennen Grover and Bennett Smith topped Adam Valderrama and Shawn Mayes, 7-5, 6-1, in doubles.
The doubles team of Dane Missmer and Lucas Vadelund received a forfeit as did Maxwil Kochan and Brett Bastian in their doubles match.
Northampton plays undefeated Freedom on Monday, but their final four contests are all against teams outside the top six in the district. If they can win out, they have a chance to qualify for team districts.
In order to participate in individual districts, a player or doubles team must have a winning record on the season and then be selected as one of the top 16 by the committee of tennis coaches. Foulk is currently 2 games below .500, so he will need to finish strong to be eligible for consideration.
