LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Tennis falls to the Hurricanes

Whitehall’s boys tennis record is 3-5 after a 7-0 loss to Liberty on Monday, but fourth-year head coach Bob Panny has seen some solid victories by his Zephyrs against East Stroudsburg South, Pleasant Valley, and East Stroudsburg North this season.

“We have six returning seniors. We’re competitive,” Coach Panny said. “Liberty is a good team and they’re going to win the match, but we had some good points and some good games, so we’re improving. They just love to play, come to practice every day, work the drills, and like the game.”

Sophomore Karim Wasfy is the Zephs’ number one singles player, Nate Mak, a junior, plays at number two singles, and senior Josh Laky is at three singles.

Mak is a returner to two singles and faced Liberty’s Roman Farhad on Monday.

“I think I have the experience of playing other people at that skill level,” Mak said. “[Farhad] was very consistent, and he moved me around a lot.”

Laky played at one singles last year but is much more comfortable at three.

“My forehand and my serve have both gotten a lot better,” Laky said, “but I should’ve been more competitive today. He hit me back a lot, so it was hard for me to play those shots because my forehand was a little weak today.”

Mak and Laky also played at one doubles but lost to Gavin Evans-Gartley and Sid Tekumalla.

Playing at two doubles for Whitehall on Monday were Dan Labram and Antoni Szlagiewicz who lost in the closest match of the day, 3-6, 2-6.

“Everyone’s gotten more experience since last year, and we’re more competitive, in general,” Laky said.

Lex Prebosnyak and Gabby Roustic are Whitehall’s three doubles players, and playing at four doubles are Jimmy Kaba and Vincent Tran.

Whitehall will face Nazareth on Friday and Stroudsburg on Saturday.
