Tennis aiming to compete

After a slow start to the season, the Zeph boys tennis team has climbed its record to 3-4 as of early this week.

The team brings back a host of seniors to help lead this year’s team.

“It’s a great group of seniors, many have been in the program for four years,” said head coach Bob Panny. “They have great leadership and work ethic.”

This year’s seniors are: Josh Laky, Dan Labram, Henry Le, Gabby Roustic, Jimmy Kaba, Lex Prebosnyak and Freddy Issa.

Panny added the younger players have been improving each and every day.

The rest of the team is made up of: juniors Nathan Mak, Antoni Szlagiewicz, Vincent Tran; sophomore Karim Wasfy and freshmen Peter Raffoul, Venkat Gangupantulu, Ahmed Syed, Derek Jiminez, Ben Unangst

Laky, Wasfy, Mak and Labram will see time at singles while Labram, Prebosnyak, Roustic, Le, Kaba, Szlagiewicz and Tran will see time at doubles.

“As a team our goals are to be competitive each and every match, in our losses this year a number of the matches have gone to three sets,” Panny said. “Individual goals are to get some players into league and district competition.

“Overall they are a super group of athletes, who come to work every day and look to improve. The younger players and learning the game and providing necessary competition for the varsity.”

Panny is assisted by Jenn Bodnar.
