Becahi looks to rebuild

Bethlehem Catholic volleyball coach Tim Sledz knows his program has a bright future, but understands the program might go through a rebuilding campaign this spring.

The Golden Hawks return a team that’s light on playing experience and Sledz is hoping all hands on deck can help the team grow this season.

“As with a lot of teams, the Covid year caused us to have to rebuild the program,” Sledz said. “We graduated 12 seniors that year and we didn’t have a chance to build up a JV behind them. So, rebuilding the team is the goal for this year into next year. A lot of seniors from other sports have stepped up to help the team this year and have been providing good leadership and athleticism for the team.”

Returning players for Becahi include Julian Guiffre (So., setter), Aziz Salloum (Sr., libero), Robby Welsh (So., setter),

Josh Doane (Jr., OH), Haize Camacho (Jr., MH) and Jack Preiss (So., MH).

“Aziz Salloum is the most experienced player this for us this year having been with the team all four years at Becahi and we look to him to provide for us passing which is key to the game,” said Sledz. “He is the player we look to, to make that play for us when things are going sideways. Haize Comacho and Jack Preiss also bring some much need experience as middle hitters in a spot that can be complicated to learn. Robby Welsh has stepped up to be our setter to help control the offense. Josh Doane and Louis Vidal provide the fire power outside replacing all-state OH Jacob Sledz who graduated last year.”

With this year’s focus on development, Sledz hopes it lays the groundwork for future success.

“Daniel Sledz along with eight other new players will provide the new growth on the team that will help the program for years to come,” he said. “A lot of the players we have are new to volleyball, but they are willing to listen, learn and apply their natural athletic skills to a new sport for them. It is great to see the game grow at all levels at Bethlehem Catholic. With their natural abilities and word ethic we hope to make some noise this season.”
