LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Baseball looking to pick up first victory

Through their first four games, Whitehall’s baseball team can easily be measured by their effort. However, the Zephyrs can’t say the same for their final results.

Whitehall began the week with an 0-4 record, a mark that truly can’t just be measured on paper.

“I can’t question their effort or preparation,” said first-year head coach Eric Schmitt. “They have worked their tails off.

“But we lost 12 seniors from a team that won eight games last year. Hopefully, we can play a little better over the next couple of games.”

Schmitt agreed that his team desperately needs a win after they haven’t been able to capture the moment. The Zephyrs have dropped games against Thomas Jefferson (Myrtle Beach trip), Emmaus, Easton, and Allentown Central Catholic.

“We were winning 2-0 against Emmaus, but their pitcher, who may be the best in the conference, came back and Emmaus scored six runs in the third, four with two out,” he stated. “We were up 3-2 against Easton, and they scored three in the top of the sixth.

“We had trouble against both Thomas Jefferson and Central.”

Schmitt complemented the play of senior outfielder Bryce Bashore and sophomore infielder Dylan Carfara. Bashore began the week hitting .300, while Carfara was at .200.

“Bryce has been on base a ton,” said Schmitt. “Dylan’s average doesn’t show it, but he has been causing havoc at the top of the lineup. I believe has been hit by a pitch eight times already, and he has done a great job bunting.”

Schmitt also noted the contributions of freshman Ryan and junior Nick Lindenmuth, who both have helped secure the mound situation.

“It has been pitching by committee,” said Schmitt. “Ryan had been looking good lately, and Nick had a great game against Easton until the sixth inning.”

Schmitt is confident his team can put their slow start behind them this week. The Zephyrs have Pocono Mountain West, Dieruff, and Allen on their schedule.

“We’re going to put the losses away,” said Schmitt. “We’re going to move on. We played well the last two games, and we have to continue to take steps in the right direction.”
