Holguin inducted at University of Scranton
Steve Holguin of Bethlehem, a senior electrical engineering major at the University of Scranton, was inducted into Eta Kappa Nu recently. Eta Kappa Nu is the student honor society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. He was selected on the basis of scholastic standing, character and leadership.
Michael Grabarits honored by scouts
The Boy Scouts of America, Minsi Trails Council, presented Michael Grabarits with a Distinguished Citizen Award during the Lehigh District Friends of Scouting Luncheon March 24.
The Distinguished Citizen Award is presented to an outstanding community leader(s) or organization who significantly contributes to the quality of life in the community and displays a high level of service to others inside and outside of the Scouting program. He is the chairman and founder of The Institute For Literacy and Learning and president and chief academic advisor of Step By Step Learning.
NCC’s DaCosta is Newman Civic Fellow
Northampton Community College health sciences student Andreina Fatima Sarmento Da Costa has been named a 2022 Newman Civic Fellow. The year-long program is for student leaders who demonstrate a commitment to finding solutions for challenges facing communities locally, nationally and internationally.
She was a U. Department of State Exchange Fellow from the Southeast Asian island of East Timor. She worked within her local community to address early pregnancy and malnutrition issues while advocating for the rights of women and actively working to end child abuse. She was recognized for her involvement in the global climate movement.
BASD students earn Albright scholarships
Freedom HS’s Angelina Wachter (Nursing and/or Pre-Medical) and Liberty HS’s Irampaye Clarisse (Education: Secondary (7-12) and/or Sociology: Family Studies) were each awarded a $17,000 annual Dean’s Scholarship to Albright College, Reading.
The students were chosen primarily on the college’s grade point average and school and community involvement.
Local Bloomsburg students complete internships
Three students from Bloomsburg University recently completed for-credit academic internships. They and the internships are, from Bethlehem: Brandon Gill, Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, and Brianna Vera, Clean Clear Body; and William Maher, Geisinger.
ESU honors Stahl, Pi Epsilon
East Stroudsburg University’s Student Activity Association, in conjunction with the Student Government Association, hosted the annual Student Organization Award Banquet on Feb. 23. Select clubs and organizations were chosen for their achievements during the 2021 calendar year. Pi Epsilon received the Fundraising Program/ Event Award. Julia Stahl, of Bethlehem, is a member of the organization.
Resiudent inducted into honor society at KU
Kutztown University inducted Daniel Glenn Stevens, of Bethlehem, into the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society at a ceremony Feb. 22. The honor society was established in 1897 to recognize and encourage superior scholarship without restriction as to area of study.
Lapp inducted into Cedar Crest honor society
Maxine Lapp, of Bethlehem, was inducted into Cedar Crest College’s Delphi Society for the fall 2021 semester in recognition of outstanding academic achievements. The honor society is for undergraduate students who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.8 at the end of their junior or senior year.
