Local egg artist to host Easter exhibit

Garden Variety Eggs is proud to present ‘Easter Around the World’ Saturday, April 9, at the Banana Factory. Artist and owner Jen Wanisko has researched many Easter traditions and will bring together displays and items representing practices from 12 countries including Ukraine, Germany, France, Mexico and Australia.

“As a young American child in the 1970s, I loved new Easter dresses, egg hunts, and all the candy, of course,” Wanisko said, “but I was also growing up learning traditional and contemporary methods of egg art that my grandmother made and sold all through the year.

“As an adult, I have developed a keen interest in Easter traditions and how different cultures incorporate the egg at Easter and as part of other spring celebrations,” she adds.

In addition to the exhibits about Easter in other countries, the event will feature three local artists. Egg Artist Christina Deutsch will demonstrate pysanky, an ancient Ukranian method of egg decorating that uses a wax-resist technique and colorful dyes.

Poured Paint Artist KL Crichton will show the beautiful results she has achieved when she recently adapted her fluid art techniques from canvas to eggs and glassware. Wanisko will demonstrate Pennsylvania German methods of egg decorating and natural dying using onion skins. Attendees can find unique Easter gifts or the perfect decorative touch for their Easter gathering.

The exhibit will also feature the stunning egg art of Wanisko’s grandmother, the late Kathryn E. Johnson of Easton. Kathryn was a founding member of the Eggs Original Club in the 1970s and was a juried member of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen. Johnson’s mastery of egg art spanned many styles, including decoupage, naturally dyed scratch-carving, beading, and Faberge-inspired pieces. Wanisko is proud to continue to display her grandmother’s work to help visitors appreciate how diverse and elaborate egg art can be.

Tickets for timed admissions are available at Eventbrite. Space is limited. Walk-ins will be welcomed, but the capacity for the Banko Family Room Gallery and the Banana Factory venue will be strictly followed.
