Boys hoops look to take next step

Catasauqua’s boys’ basketball 0-22 season wasn’t filled with some expected circumstances.

“The kids never quit,” said head coach Eric Snyder. “They always showed up, and there never were any problems. They worked hard throughout the season.

“You would figure that there would be a lot of disgruntled players and parents, but that wasn’t the case. Everyone began to realize what we could do. We had a lot of young players who were learning out there.

“Those guys worked until the end. We thought we could pull out a couple of victories, but it didn’t fall in line for us.”

Senior Donovan Keys, who worked his way through a football knee injury, maintained a solid presence throughout the season.

“Donovan was our leader, and our voice of reason,” added Snyder. “He really set the tone for us, and the kids respected him.

“Donovan got a lot of time as a sophomore, and he really understood what was happening for us this season.”

Snyder noted how he didn’t place a team in the Stellar or Allentown Throwdown tournaments this past summer after attendance in the weekly Panther Valley league was down.

“We had about four guys show up in the beginning, and I thought it was wise for us not to play in the tournaments,” he said. “These guys weren’t too sure of anything back then.

“We’re looking forward to our incoming freshmen next year, and I am confident we can get back to playing in those tournaments.”

As he turns the corner into his 31st year next season, Snyder is optimistic about his team’s chances in the 2022-223 season.

“We have a great bunch of freshmen coming in,” said Snyder. “We expect them to suit up for varsity.

“We’ll bring a good number of them back, and they gained floor experience this year. They got better as the season went on, and they should be able to take the next step.”
