Summer playground program needs counselors

The good news is that, after a two-year shutdown because of the COVID-19 pandemic, a Salisbury Township summer playground program is planned.

The bad news is the summer program may be cut back or jeopardized because of a lack of playground counselors.

“I need to get more applications,” Salisbury Township Recreation Director Genny Baillie told a reporter for The Press before the March 24 commissioners’ meeting.

Baillie said 16 to 17 playground counselors are needed.

“I only have three applications,” Baillie said.

The counselors work part-time, typically 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday and 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday. The starting rate of pay is $10 per hour. A counselor must be age 16 and have transportation.

Baillie said the deadline for applications is April 8. Each applicant must receive FBI clearance, Pennsylvania State Police clearance and a criminal check.

“Having been shut down for two years because of COVID, I have to start over,” Baillie said.

“I’ve been doing the summer playground for 30 years,” Baillie said to commissioners at the March 24 meeting, adding, “After being shut down for two years, I’m starting at ground zero.”

The summer program is in Laubach Park, Lindberg Park and Green Acres Park.

A lack of counselors might suspend the summer program at Green Acres Park. The Wednesday evening program may also not be held.

Also resuming after a 2-year halt because of the pandemic shutdown is the Easter Egg Hunt, 10 a.m. April 9 at Franko Farm Park. The registration deadline for children ages 3-10 is April 6; for more information, visit https://www.salisburytownshippa.org/township-news/eas.
